The honest answer – and what nobody tells you before you start.
You’ve probably tried a few things already.
Maybe the gym membership that lasted until February. The running phase that ended when the dark mornings arrived. The class you went to twice and quietly stopped booking.
And now you’re looking at fitness kickboxing and wondering: is this actually going to be different, or is it just another thing I’ll try and stop?
That’s the right question to ask. So let’s answer it properly.
Does fitness kickboxing actually help with weight loss?
Yes – but not for the reason most people think.
The calorie burn is real. A 60-minute fitness kickboxing class burns somewhere between 500 and 800 calories depending on your size and how hard you work. That’s higher than most gym sessions, higher than a standard spin class, and significantly higher than a jog around Pittville Park.
But calories alone don’t explain why people who do kickboxing tend to keep doing it when other things haven’t stuck.
The real reason is this: kickboxing gives you a reason to show up that has nothing to do with weight loss.
You’re learning something. You’re getting better at something. The punch combination that felt clumsy in week one feels sharper by week three. The kick that took all your concentration in your first session becomes second nature by week six. That sense of progress – skill progress, not just fitness progress – is what makes the difference between a class you do for a month and one you’re still doing a year later.
Weight loss is the side effect of consistency. Kickboxing makes consistency easier to achieve than almost anything else.
What actually happens to your body in a Fitness Kickboxing class?
In a typical session at our school in Cheltenham, you’ll spend about an hour doing a combination of:
Pad work and technique drills – this is where you’re actually punching and kicking combinations with a partner holding pads. Your heart rate climbs fast and stays there. Your arms, shoulders, core and legs are all working simultaneously.
Bag work – solo rounds on a heavy bag. Controlled, repetitive, and oddly satisfying. If you’ve had a bad day, there is nothing quite like it.
Conditioning circuits – bodyweight exercises woven between rounds. Squats, press-ups, core work. Not endless. Just enough to build the strength that makes your technique better.
Cool down – mobility and stretching. Often the bit people appreciate most once they’ve been coming a while.
The reason this burns more than the gym is simple: you’re never really resting. You’re either working or recovering briefly before the next round. Your heart rate stays elevated throughout, and that combination of cardio and resistance in the same session is what produces visible changes to your body faster than either in isolation.

What results do people actually see – and when?
Here’s what we typically see with people who come to our fitness kickboxing classes in Cheltenham and stick to two or three sessions a week:
Weeks 1-3: Everything aches. You’ll find muscles you didn’t know you had. Energy levels fluctuate. You’re learning the movements and your brain is working hard alongside your body.
Weeks 4-6: The movements start to feel natural. You stop thinking and start doing. Your stamina improves noticeably — you’re recovering between rounds faster. Clothes may start to feel different before the scales show anything, because you’re building muscle while losing fat.
Month 3 onwards: This is when the visible changes arrive. Body composition shifts. Posture improves. You move differently outside the gym – more upright, more coordinated. People notice before you do.
What nobody tells you is that most people stop caring so much about the weight loss by this point, because they feel genuinely good in a way they haven’t in years. The goal shifts from losing something to keeping something they’ve found.
Is it for you if you’re not fit right now?
This is the question most people ask and don’t ask at the same time.
The honest answer: our classes are full of people who came in out of shape and worried. That’s not an exception – it’s the norm. You are not the only person who hasn’t done anything physical in two years. You are not the only person who is nervous about being the least fit person in the room.
You won’t be the least fit person in the room. And even if you were, nobody is looking at you. Everyone is too busy trying to remember which hand to jab with.
Fitness kickboxing in Cheltenham is not a class for people who are already fit. It’s how people get fit. There’s a difference, and it matters.
You don’t need to be able to do anything particular before you start. You need a pair of trainers and the willingness to show up.
What about if you’ve got kids, a job, and not much time?
Most of our members do. Our classes run Monday to Thursday evenings (5pm, 6pm & 7pm) and Monday (9:30am) , Tuesday (9:30am) , Thursday (9:30am) & Saturday (9am) mornings – specifically so that parents and working adults can fit training around real life.
One hour, two or three times a week. That’s the realistic commitment. Not a personality change, not a complete overhaul of your schedule. Just a consistent hour that becomes genuinely something you look forward to rather than something you have to drag yourself to.
That shift – from have to to want to – is what changes everything.
So is fitness kickboxing good for weight loss in Cheltenham?
Yes. Genuinely, yes.
But more than that: it’s good for the energy levels you’ve been missing. The confidence that’s been quiet for a while. The feeling of being capable in your body rather than frustrated by it.
Weight loss is what brings most people through the door. It’s rarely what keeps them coming back.
